  • St. Mary's Church Bad Deutsch-Altenburg

A magnificent medieval building not far from the Danube: the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg attracts everyone's attention with its striking Romanesque towers.

Ancient walls and spirituality that is still alive today: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg presents itself with film-worthy facades of original origin. With its magnificent medieval exterior, it is considered one of the most beautiful choir complexes in Austria. It was built as early as 1050 - in Romanesque, three-aisled pillar construction with an early Gothic choir and west tower. In 1058, it was given as a gift to the Empress Dowager Agnes.

From around 1231, Alban and Johann Dörr were responsible for the church's reconstruction and extensive long-term extensions. After several fire damages over the centuries, a major renovation of the valuable building was finally initiated: Architect Richard Jordan started the extensive work around 1897 - and successfully completed it in 1911. Today, the extraordinary Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Bad Deutsch-Altenburg belongs to the Hainburg deanery of the Archdiocese of Vienna. Every year it is visited and viewed by numerous believers, pilgrims and excursionists.

The Romanesque charnel house, which dates back to the early 13th century, still stands to the south-east of the church. It has been used by the municipality as a funeral parlor since 1995.
