Welcome to what is certainly the most exotic destination in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel: the Gärtner family's extensive ostrich farm - nestled in the idyllic Kamp Valley ("Kamptal" in German) - is an exciting breeding farm for ostriches, nandus and emus. While the main building in Schönberg is used for breeding and rearing chicks, the area for the adult birds is a little further away on the mountain.
Guided tours from April to October teach visitors all about these fascinating animals. After a film presentation on the subject of "ostriches", the tour continues to the outdoor area: More than 300 ostriches, nandus and emus live here on around 16 hectares of land. The experience for the whole family is rounded off with the magnificent vegetation - from giant cacti to banana trees and southern flowers.
Tip: Special age-appropriate tours are offered for school groups - with or without an egg dish as a culinary highlight.
The Gärtner family sells numerous unusual products from their feathered animals in their own store - such as eggs and eggshells, meat and feathers or pasta, creams and leather products.
