Before the Danube runs through the „Wachau Valley“ it passes the „Nibelungengau Area“ which has to tell a lot of exciting stories.
From the Nibelungen-Legend to the Nibelungen-Area
The name of the Valley between Ybbs and Melk has its origin in the Nibelungenlegend. Rüdiger from Bechelaren (today Pöchlarn) should have had his headquarters as a vassal of Attila King of the Huns in this area. So part of the story takes place along the Danube and also in the Nibelungengau.
A message in a bottle was washed up on the shore in the Nibelungengau. It contains the treasure map of the secrets that lie hidden in the wonderful and varied nature of the region north and south of the Danube between Pöchlarn and Ybbs or Leiben and Persenbeug-Gottsdorf and are waiting to be discovered.
The treasure hunt leads on a journey through time, to new discoveries with the best views and lets you get to know the people of the region, their history(s), tradition and zeitgeist.
All treasures can be easily explored via long-distance and circular hiking trails and, in particular, by bike.
