Hike through the most famous vineyards in the Wachau, such as Loibenberg, Kellerberg in Dürnstein, Ried Achleiten in Weissenkirchen and of course, Singerriedl in Spitz an der Donau. High above the free-flowing Danube River and centuries-old stone terraces in the winegrowing area of the Wachau, the World Heritage Trail takes you through some of the leading vineyards of along the Danube and a host of apricot and peach orchards. In the wine villages, you can visit one of the many heurige, those typical Austrian wine taverns.

Immerse yourself in a 2000-year-old cultural landscape, passing by legendary castles and traveling back in time to the Middles Ages and the Renaissance. Enjoy the beautiful natural settings and the captivating panoramic views of the unique river landscape along with regional delicacies and award-winning Wachau wines. So many of life’s delights await you here.

Our host provides hiker’s bag lunches for on the trail and transfers your luggage to the next accommodation.

Day 1 – Arrival
You travel to Krems on your own.
Overnight stay in Krems, breakfast included.

Day 2 – Krems - Dürnstein
Distance 12.5 km – Duration 4 h 30 min
You begin the hike in front of the hotel and walk past the Und Monastery in the direction of Stein. Then you climb up the most beautiful stairway in the Wachau, passing by venerable villas and through picturesque vineyards. Time and again stunning views open up of the Danube, the historical centers of Krems and Stein, and Göttweig Abbey. You proceed on narrow streets to the Stein fortress ruins and then follow old wine trails passing by the Höhereck conservation area. After reaching the Kellerberg vineyard, you enter a fascinating landscape of forest and rocks with plenty of inviting spots to stop and rest. Then you walk through the town gate (Steiner Tor) into the historical center of Dürnstein, where the trek ends.

Day 3 – Dürnstein - Weissenkirchen
Distance 17 km – Duration 6 h
This hiking day starts in Dürnstein, where you can explore this medieval town on a stroll of your own.  Then you climb the medieval stairs known as Eselsteig up to the Dürnstein castle ruins. Legend has it that King Richard the Lionhearted was held for ransom here. You proceed to the Starhembergwarte lookout tower and then to the Fesslhütte, a forest tavern. After that, you follow the Höhenweg trail past the most famous vineyards in the Wachau with magnificent views of the river landscape below until reaching Weissenkirchen, the final destination of the day.

Day 4 – Weissenkirchen - Spitz
Distance 10.5 km – Duration 3 h 30 min
Today the hike begins in Weissenkirchen. The route leads via the Gothic fortress known as Teisenhoferhof, through famous vineyards to the Michaelerberg natural monument. Then through a valley called Mieslingtal and the town gate (Rotes Tor) to the best vineyard in Spitz Ried Singerriedel and beyond to the Baroque-style church square in Spitz an der Donau. You can look forward to an afternoon wine tasting session at a winery in Spitz.

Day 5 – Ride on a Danube ship and trip home
After a hearty breakfast, you walk to the Spitz landing stage near the cable ferry. You then experience the Wachau from the most scenic vantage point, aboard a Danube ship. You pass picturesque villages and world-famous vineyards on your way to Krems, your point of departure, and head home from there.
