A wonderful holiday awaits you in one of the best-known regions in the world. The extraordinary cultural landscape in the Wachau is a real treasure and was named a UNESCO World Heritage region in 2000.

This special hike “For Climbing Enthusiasts and Wine Lovers” takes you along the panoramic Wachau World Heritage Trail, passing first through the most scenic vineyards in this unique section of the Danube Valley. On your way to the top of the Jauerling, you walk by the Hans-Pichler Nature Park House. The adjoining terrace affords a stunning view of the riverscape below. The hosts provide hiker’s bag lunches for on the trail and transfer your luggage to the next accommodation.

Day 1 – Arrival
You travel on your own to Spitz an der Donau. Overnight stay in Spitz, breakfast included.
Enjoy a heuriger (wine tavern) in Spitz in the evening.

Day 2 – Spitz - Mühldorf
Distance 13 km – Duration 4 h
Proceeding from Spitz over the hill known as Tausendeimerberg (literally: “thousand bucket mountain” for the volume of grapes picked there annually), you enter the scenic vineyards on the Setzberg. As you hike along the panoramic trail and down the Spitzer Graben, the vineyards give way to apricot orchards. In the lush Eichenwald forest you pass by three shelters run by a vintner’s association called Verein Marivino (currently closed) before arriving in Muthstall. Proceed via Niederranna to Oberranna castle. The trail then descends gently along a stream called the Ötzbach to Unterranna and from there to Mühldorf, the final destination of the day.
Overnight stay in Mühldorf, breakfast included.

Day 3 – Mühldorf – Spitz - Departure
Distance 13,5 km – Duration 5 h
From Mühldorf, you hike over the 628m high Trenning, passing the highest elevation vineyard in Lower Austria before ascending the Jauerling, known as the “Roof of the Wachau” at 915m high. The trail takes you by the Hans-Pichler Nature Park House at the summit, then via Benking through a lovely forest passing the three summits Hirschenkogel, Zwölferkogel and Elferkogel before reaching the Hinterhaus fortress ruins. From there it is just a short distance to Spitz, the final destination for the day.
