Hiking through the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage region, is a joy for body and soul. The World Heritage Trail runs along the north and south bank, high above the free-flowing Danube and age-old stone terraces. Walk through famous Wachau vineyards, numerous apricot orchards, and sleepy wine villages with the down-to-earth, typically Austrian wine taverns known as heurige.

Immerse yourself in a 2000-year-old cultural landscape, passing by legendary castles and traveling to the Middles Ages and the Renaissance. Enjoy the beautiful natural settings and captivating panoramic views of the unique river landscape along with regional delicacies and award-winning wines. So many of life’s delights await you here.

Your hosts provide hiker’s bag lunches for on the trail and transfer your luggage to the next accommodation.

Day 1 – Arrival
Travel on your own to Krems. Overnight stay in Krems, breakfast included.

Day 2 – Krems - Dürnstein
Distance 12.5 km – Duration 4 h 30 min
You pass through the historical center of Krems, Hoher Markt with the Gothic Gozzoburg, then on via the Krems vineyards to the historical center of Stein and into a cellar-lined road with heurige wine taverns. Next, you walk by the fortress ruins in Stein. You cross the expansive Loibenberg vineyards and go by the Baroque Kellerschlössel before entering medieval Dürnstein with its elegant Baroque monastery.

Day 3 – Dürnstein - Weissenkirchen
Distance 16 km – Duration 6 h
You climb the medieval stairs known as Eselsteig up to the Dürnstein castle ruins. King Richard the Lionhearted was held for ransom here. You continue over rocky landscape and an oak forest to the Starhembergwarte, a lookout tower on Schlossberg. Then you proceed to the Fesslhütte, a forest tavern, and to Kanzel, a spectacular lookout point. After that, you take the Höhenweg trail to Schildhütten where you can enjoy refreshments at Pomassl winery. Then you walk through the famed Achleiten and Klaus vineyards on a panoramic trail to the wine town of Weissenkirchen with its fortified church and Teisenhoferhof, a Gothic fortress.

Day 4 – Weissenkirchen - Spitz
Distance 10.5 km – Duration 3 h 30 min
After passing through the Gothic quarter in and around the fortress, you enter the famous vineyards surrounding Weissenkirchen. You then pass through meadows and rocky landscape on the Michaelerberg, natural landmark and on to the Rotes Tor town gate in Spitz. Descent through vineyards to the Baroque-style church square in Spitz. You can look forward to an afternoon wine tasting session at a winery in Spitz.

Day 5 – Spitz – Aggstein/Aggsbach Dorf
Distance 16.5 km – Duration 5 h 30 min
Start by crossing the Danube to Arnsdorf on the cable ferry. Hike in the Buchen Valley with an optional ascent to Hoher Stein. Proceed through Dunkelsteinerwald forest to Maria Langegg Monastery (with pilgrim museum). Next you arrive at the imposing Aggstein castle ruin. Descent to your accommodations for the night, Radlerhof Kienesberger in Aggstein.

Day 6 – Aggstein/Aggsbach Dorf - Melk
Distance 17 km – Duration 6 h
Today’s hike takes you past the Aggsbach Dorf charterhouse and hammer works and up to the Hohenwarther Höhe in the Dunkelsteinerwald forest. Descend on forest and meadow trails to Schönbühel with its castle and Servite monastery. Then walk on via the Jonaskreuz lookout point to the historical center of Melk and the magnificent Melk Abbey.

Day 7 – Ride on a Danube ship and trip home
The tour ends with a ride on a Danube ship through the Wachau from Melk to Krems. Before that, it is highly recommended that you take a look at Melk Abbey and the historical center of the town.
