On an excursion or vacation by the river, nature and history fans of all ages can experience great adventures.
Mautern: In the footsteps of the Romans
The Celts already appreciated the favorable location on the river. The landscape - situated on a popular trade route for iron and salt and on the northern border with the Germanic tribes - was also considered an important settlement in Roman times. Finds from the former legionary camp of Favianis from the 1st century AD prove this. Today they are on display in the Mautern Roman Museum. The Favianis Mutaren cultural trail through the old town provides fascinating insights into the Roman and medieval history of the town.
Sights along the river
Particularly worth seeing in Mautern an der Donau are the Roman Tower, the Goldhauben Museum, the Horseshoe Tower and the Roman Road. The impressive baroque parish church with its Stations of the Cross by M.J. Schmidt is also worth a visit. The Gothic elements of the three-aisled stepped church from 1400 are still partially visible.
