The area around Erlauf has been known as a settlement site for at least 3,500 years; the Celts called the place Arlape "Eagle River". In modern times, Erlauf became famous because the Soviet and American armies met here for the first time on 8 May 1945 on the occasion of the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. The ERLAUF ERINNERT museum has therefore existed since 2015, which deals with the reappraisal of contemporary history and the culture of remembrance.
The Danube cycle path leads along the river Erlauf, through the village of Erlauf, to the Ötscherland cycle path. Nature lovers appreciate the hiking opportunities, such as the river nature trail along the Erlauf or to the Eichberg chapel, from where there is a wonderful view of the Erlauf valley, the Nibelungengau, the Wachau and the Ötscherland.
Erlauf also offers numerous leisure facilities, such as a natural playground with beach volleyball court, skating rink, soccer pitch, tennis courts, ice skating rink and curling rink.
Our tip: The treasures of the Nibelungengau are hidden in the municipality of Erlauf. All the treasures full of enjoyment, variety and the best views can be discovered at www.nibelungengau.at.
