There was ship and boat traffic on the Danube back in prehistoric times. For the Ancient Romans the Danube served as the frontier between the Roman Empire and the peoples of the north; in medieval times it was the center of east-west trade in the Austro-Bavarian Danubian region.
Ships and rafts were built solely of wood prior to the advent of steamships in the mid-19 c.
The Shipping Museum in Spitz offers visitors diverse insights into the technology and history of historical Danube shipping.
