Built around 1113 by the Knights of Leyben, the castle has experienced a varied history and thus also changing owners. The 800-year-old castle is enthroned on a mighty rock with a unique wooden coffered ceiling from the 17th century, which shows the cycle of planetary deities by Hendrik Goltzim from 1569. It was not until 1989 that the market town of Leiben was able to acquire this important architectural monument, renovate it in line with its listed status and make it available to guests and citizens.
In the castle vaults, visitors can experience the Austrian Museum of Agriculture with evidence of the very first generation of tractors and impressive, individually made movable experimental models of a steam plow, a locomobile and a threshing machine. Also worth seeing: the enormous collection of scales from all over the world.
