The Danube region in Lower Austria, with breath-taking World Cultural Heritage Site of Wachau has long been considered to be a true holiday gem, and as a favourite meeting point for cyclists and connoisseurs from all over the world. The beautiful scenery can be experienced to the greatest possible extent on a number of routes, with varying levels of difficulty.

Day 1
Individual arrival in Wachau and overnight stay in comfortable bed and bike accommodation. Establishments which have been awarded the “Bed + Bike Quality Mark” welcome cycle tourists for just one night, and provide safe bike storage facilities, as well as drying facilities for clothing and equipment. In addition, the owners help with small malfunctions, or provide the contact details of local bicycle dealers.

Day 2 – Spitz - Krems - Mautern - Arnsdorf
Distance 40 km
Take your bike and go on a pleasant ride through the old winemaking villages of Spitz, Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein, to Krems. Several restaurants, taverns and “Best of Wachau” establishments invite you to taste the regional cuisine. The town of Krems has a historic old town centre. The pedestrian zone boasts shops, coffee houses and farmers' markets, as well as museums and churches. Cross the Stein-Mautern bridge over the Danube, travel along the south bank on the Rivers Route, making sure to stop at one of the numerous taverns to experience the “Best of Wachau”. The Spitz – Arnsdorf ferry brings you back across the Danube, to your starting point.

Day 3 – Spitz - Willendorf - Emmersdorf - Weitenegg - Pöchlarn - Melk
Distance 40 km
Sees you head to upper Wachau, to Willendorf – the site where the “Venus of Willendorf” statue was found, and home of the “Venusium”. Continue along the north bank towards Emmersdorf and the Weitenegg Leisure Centre, where a fabulous beach invites you to jump into the water and cool down. Continue to cycle along the Pöchlarn bridge over the Danube bridge, and along the south bank back to Melk. A tour of Melk Abbey gives you a glimpse of a day in the life of a Benedictine monk. In the late afternoon, enjoy a ride back through Wachau from the comfort of a Danube ship.

Day 4 – Spitz - Mühldorf - Raxendorf - Weitental - Emmersdorf
Distance 50 km
Discover the Wachau wilderness. Cycle through Spitzer Graben, which is one of the steepest vineyard terraces in the region. From Mühldorf, cycle through towns in the southern Waldviertel such as Trandorf and Raxendorf, and through sweet fragrant meadows and forest landscapes. Continue through what is known in the Weitental as the “Valley of the Sundials” until you return to the Rivers Route in Emmersdorf and enjoy Wachau once more.
