The three-aisled Gothic nave was built between 1466 and 85 under the Viennese master builder Laurenz Spenning. The church was not completed until after 1500 when the choir was vaulted.

In addition to prehistoric and early historical finds from the surrounding area, there is also evidence of Roman settlement activity here since Emperor Vespasian (69-79 AD). The favorable location on the Danube and the trade routes leading to it led to the development of a trading center on the Danube very early on under the protection of a Carolingian castle settlement called "Eparesburg".

The town was repeatedly ravaged by severe fires and flood disasters. For example, only seven houses survived the catastrophic fire on June 17, 1716, which destroyed 53 houses. In another major fire on June 16, 1868, the entire town was again destroyed. To this day, the town of Ybbs has developed well economically and structurally - but especially as a school town.
