The market town of Weißenkirchen in the district of Krems-Land is considered the largest wine-growing community in the Wachau - in harmony with the wine-growing villages of Joching, Wösendorf and St. Michael. The historic town centers captivate visitors with their dreamy alleyways and idyllic views of the inner courtyards. Country inns, wine taverns and award-winning restaurants invite you to linger. Weißenkirchen is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy - surrounded by picturesque vineyards.

Extra tip for hikers and long-distance viewers: the Gruberwarte on the Buschandlwand at 743 meters above sea level between St. Michael and Spitz offers fantastic views of the Danube and the Alps.

Weißenkirchen: Wachau Festival & beautiful museum

The impressive Teisenhoferhof dating from the 13th century was completed during the Renaissance around 1542. Today, it houses the Wachau Wine Academy and Painting School, as well as the Wachau Museum: it shows exhibitions on traditional costumes, traditions and the Wachau painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Teisenhoferhof also hosts regular events such as wine baptisms, the annual Advent market and high-quality performances of the Wachau Festival.

Other sights in Weißenkirchen

The fortified church of Weißenkirchen is one of the most important church fortresses in the whole of Lower Austria. The late medieval fortifications from 1530 have been largely preserved to this day. The fortified church of St. Michael is another sacred building dating from around 1500. Incidentally, the parish of St. Michael is another 500 years older - making it the oldest parish in the Wachau. Three historic salt barns from the 17th century, which still stand on the Danube today, are also well worth seeing.
