The town of Grein lies in a small bay at the entrance to the Strudengau, a 25 km long narrow valley of the Danube.
The Danube Festival Weeks in Strudengau and the Grein Summer Festival are part of the extensive cultural program of this historic town. Grein's municipal theater is the oldest secular theater in Austria that has been preserved in its original form. A guided tour of Greinburg Castle with its "Stone Theater" should not be missed in the program. The Upper Austrian Shipping Museum provides a historical overview of river shipping.
